Department of Living Art and Design
Students enter their chosen program from the third year.
The Department of Living Art and Design Offers Five Programs That Explore New Lifestyle Designs.
Seeking new possibilities in design expression, students gain comprehensive expertise from basic to specialized knowledge and techniques in graphics and product design, media editorial design, jewelry, and artwork. Students enter their selected program from the third year, but the curriculum is designed so that students can select from a wide range of expression media without being limited to one field. Our students become creative people who understand expression in related areas and can excel in their chosen paths.
Program in Graphics and Product Design
Students learn about graphics (two dimensional) and products (three dimensional) using our integrated approach. In graphics, students create logos, calendars, and visual designs for shops, while in product design, students produce such objects as household items and lighting fixtures. The program aims to give students the skills to deliver comprehensive design solutions for new lifestyles based on an understanding of trends and markets
Program in Media Editorial Design
In this program, students learn techniques and methods to analyze lifestyle culture from such perspectives as media, history, and ethnicity and to communicate their findings as information. By producing magazines and books, students master the entire publishing process from planning, editing, news-gathering, and photography to layout design and bookbinding. Our students become information creators who can excel in the mass media, publishing, advertising, and printing fields.
Program in Textile Work
Starting with the fundamentals, students master knowledge and techniques regarding dyeing (including stencil printing and tie-dyeing) and weaving (including plain weave and twill). They also learn advanced application techniques, including how to use textiles to decorate living spaces and how to convert textiles into Western and Japanese clothing. The program educates students to become professionals with the refined creativity, sensibilities, and planning ability to offer innovative new lifestyle ideas.
Program in Jewelry and Metalwork
Students comprehensively master metalworking techniques and design by creating jewelry, metalwork, and cloisonne. Students participate in design contests and public subscription exhibitions organized by corporations, and many win impressive awards. With the outstanding design expression abilities they gain through the practical curriculum, our graduates are active in the fields of planning, production, and design.
Program in Artwork
In addition to painting, sculpture, and other traditional forms of art and design, students experiment broadly with two-dimensional expression using photographs and prints as well as with three-dimensional and other spatial expression using a variety of materials. With an understanding of everyday contemporary visual expression, students explore art and design from numerous angles to develop to maximum degree their individuality and sensibilities so that they can engage in the type of creative activities they are most suited to.
