Doctoral Program in Environmental Clothing Studies
Clothing is a personfs most immediate environment; clothing envelops a person and is a form of personal expression. Viewing fashion as a key element constituting the social and cultural environment of a person, the doctoral program conducts research into fashion science within the context of environmental clothing studies. The main pillars of our doctoral program include clothing materials, clothing hygiene, clothing handling, clothing production and marketing, and apparel and living environment. These courses are not merely extensions of those in the Masterfs Program in Clothing Science Studies, but aim to create more comprehensive research methods and develop a framework for new research domains and topics. Students receive a doctorate following defense of their dissertation. Our doctoral degree holders now work at universities and research institutes in Japan and overseas.
Masterfs Program in Clothing Science Studies
The masterfs program aims to train fashion science researchers and develop specialists in charge of developing cutting-edge techniques and information in the fashion industry. To address the many specialized fields within fashion science, the curriculum allows students to specialize in clothing materials, clothing handling, clothing hygiene, fashion sociology, fashion business, Japanese costume history, Western costume history, clothing production and marketing, and clothing design. The program actively promotes research and international activities that focus on the uniquely interdisciplinary nature of fashion science. Masterfs program graduates who wish to conduct more advanced study may enter the doctoral program.
NEW Global Fashion Concentration (English-Language Program)
Fashion is becoming increasingly globalized. Fashion specialists today need not only English conversation skills, but also the ability to express themselves and communicate in English about their field of expertise. Japanese students of fashion have pointed out the need for an English-language fashion program, and international students have also requested an English-language program, saying that they are interested in Japanese fashion but their Japanese-language skills are not sufficient for study in Japanese. The Global Fashion Concentration has been created in response to this demand from students and will open in 2012. The Global Fashion Concentration includes seminars and covers a broad spectrum of areas -from textiles to design and from Japanese clothing-construction culture to advanced media studies. To graduate, students must earn 20 credits, including an internship, and also write a master's thesis (10 credits) on a topic of their choice. Japanese-language core courses in the department are also open to students.

Masterfs Program in Living Environment Studies
The Masterfs Program in Living Environment Studies investigates the creation of an ideal living environment and encompasses two fields of inquiry: living art and design and dwelling environment. Students in the Living Art and Design Concentration enhance their mastery of theories and research related to household item design, graphic and editorial design, aesthetics, the arts, and industrial arts. Students in this concentration are required to create an original work for their degree. Students in the Dwelling Environment Concentration further their knowledge of theories and research related to design history, design principles, planning theory, and design practice. Students in this concentration are required to submit a final paper. Both concentrations promote research activities based on the needs of society, including examination of contemporary lifestyle issues and proposals of lifestyles for the future.
