Master’s Program in Humanities and Intercultural Studies

The Graduate School of Humanities and Intercultural Studies is founded upon the foundation of the Faculty of Intercultural Studies. It offers two concentrations–Intercultural Concentration, and Health Psychology Concentration – to develop research by increasing the specialty of each of the two areas. By examining modern societies from intercultural and health phychology perspectives, the combining of the courses and the fusing of areas from each concentration are also considered, whilst developing research activities in order to solve issues based on requests from society. Foreign language bibliographical studies, research methods and special lectures for the Master's Program are offered as subjects common to the two concentrations.

Intercultural Concentration

In the midst of globalization and the IT revolution, the International Concentration aims to prepare students for the real world as specialists who can contribute to the global society by helping them acquire enriched international sensitivity and add an international perspective necessary for the understanding of Japanese and foreign cultures.
Our major areas to be examined are various cultural patterns/types including foreign cultures, language, thought, politics, business, and tourism, how they interact with each other and their effects on modern society.
We look forward to welcoming students who are eager to become involved in international exchange, challenge a new field and open new research frontiers with flexible thinking.

Health Psychology Concentration

The 21st century is said to be the “age of the mind”, and we see a great interest in psychology. The Health Psychology Concentration presents research methods and basic knowledge about data analysis to develop the research in this field. The Concentration also considers the desirable condition of the mind and the body of modern people, and studies ways of aiding people and methodologies to support behavioral changes. With increasing interests in matters related to “mental health”, the Concentration offers students a chance to learn ways of handling stress and methods for living a healthier and a more active life, training them to become specialists with practical skills. In addition, it also creates new interdisciplinary areas through collaboration with the other studies. Another direction of this Concentration is also to specifically understand fashion from the viewpoint of health psychology and study the contributions of “fashion” to mental health. In addition to this, the Concentration also studies methods to increase QOL through sports and exercise. Under this program, students will pursue methods for people to live a more mentally enriched and physically and socially healthier life, while studying the better ways to support people through actual onsite practical training.
